Modern Deep Left Quartet

Deadbeat

TIKIMAN

Mike Shannon

Fumiya Tanaka

The Mole

Rotation 10 Year Anniversary part 1 – Bunka Vibe

As we reach the tenth year of organizing events, we have planned to celebrate in style with a two-part event featuring talented Canadian and Japanese artists entitled Bunka Vibe. Part 1 will feature Modern Deep Left Quartet which is Cobblestone Jazz plus the Mole and Deadbeat feat Tikiman Live and DJs Fumiya Tanaka and Mike Shannon. We will also have a group of talented Japanese and Canadian local djs/artists, an Electronic photo exhibition of Canada by Spectator Magazine, a mix cd giveaway from Interchill records from Canada mixed by Patrick Oancia.  Please join us for a special night of music, art and people.

Modern Deep Left Quartet

Modern Deep Left Quartet uses early computers and analog instruments to create pared down sounds that retain the quality of improvisational jazz within the parameters of a minimal, dance-floor aesthetic. Through a real-time exchange of musical form, language, and ideas, Tyger Dhula, Mathew Jonson, Danuel Tate and The Mole provide a continual sense of surprise and discovery for their listeners.

The influence each member has on the group sound contributes to the success they continue to recieve. Tyger Dhula’s history as a DJ and producer of electronic music provides the necessary stylistic foundations that form the backdrop for the group’s improvisations. His ability to break grooves up into their key elements holds the music firmly within electronic music traditions. Mathew Jonson’s gifted ability to mix and compose freely, and his commitment to pushing his music in new directions is always present. Using analogue drum machines and synthesizers as his instruments, he chooses to write his parts in the moment instead of conforming to pre-configured patterns. Danuel Tate’s history as a jazz musician and performer prompted the approach to the group’s writing practices. His keyboard playing shows a rich understanding of modern harmony and melody, but like many great artists, his dedication to simplicity is what holds him in such high regard. Colin de la Plante aka the Mole  is a master sampler who has been perfecting his disco-tabbed fusion of Detroit techno and British progressive house and adds another dimension to the quartets sound.

Their last release on Wagon Repair – the  Babyfoot Ep is a good example of how their music is created in one take, either culled from live performances or studio mixes, and their live shows are a representation of how they create music. These performances give audiences a fresh perspective on the genius of Mathew Jonson as well as the future of electronic music itself.

Deadbeat

Deadbeat is one Scott Monteith, a long time Montrealer and recent Berlin ex-pat who has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000, for labels such as Cynosure, Musique Risquée, Scape, and Spectral to name but a few. His work has been met with consistent critical acclaim from the industry’s leading publications and websites, and drawn regular performance invitations for some of the world’s most respected festivals, including Barcelona’s Sonar, Berlin’s Transmediale, and Montreal’s own MUTEK.

From 1999 to late 2003, Scott worked, assuming various roles, for the Montreal based company Applied Acoustics Systems, makers of a range of critically acclaimed software synthesizers. Having now moved on to pursue his own musical efforts full time, the experience has left him with a passion for the development of new creative interfaces, and a strong grasp of some the most cutting edge technology in the industry. A certified music technology junkie, his knowledge in such matters has been occasionally called upon at various events, most notably the 2007 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy in Melbourne, Australia.

Whether crafting kaleidoscopic house and techno, snap-clap digital dancehall, or impossibly heavy dub, Scott continues to search for his own unique voice between the ones and zeros. Most recently, Scott released “Roots and Wire”  in 2008,  which is  his first full-length release for Wagon Repair. The album is aesthetically informed by his long term collaborative friendship with Robert Henke (Monolake), the creative relationship with Wagon Repair, the close proximity of his fellow artists in Berlin and the opportunity to collaborate with Paul St. Hilaire aka Tikiman.

Other projects:
Atlantic Waves – Collaboration with Monolake
Crackhaus – Collaboration with Stephen Beaupré

Tikiman

Paul St. Hilaire aka Tikiman was born on the Caribbean island Dominica. Since mid of the 1990ies he lives in Berlin. Until 2002 Paul St. Hilaire performs and publishes under the artist name TIKIMAN. In Berlin, Paul St. Hilaire quickly advanced to a highly demanded artist in the international dub and electronic music scene. He became well known by concerts worldwide and collaborations with numerous producers of various type of music. He worked with musicians like Moritz von Oswald, Mark Ernestus, Stereotyp, Jean-Marie Aerts, just to mention a few. St. Hilaire performs regularly in different formations at top venues and festivals, from Roskilde to Chiemsee Reggae Summer to Sonar. He is giving concerts with Scion from Chain Reaction, The Bug, Deadbeat, and with Rhythm & Sound in Europe, the U.S., Canada, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. A narrow relationship links Paul St. Hilaire to the Rhythm & Sound duo Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, the founders of the worldwide reknown cult lables Basic Channel and Chain Reaction. Their famous minimalistic soundscapes and St. Hilaire‘s flowing roots-reggae vocals melt to a fascinating futuristic aesthetic in more than a dozen of R&S singles. In 2000, Paul St. Hilaire sets up his own lable False Tuned within the sublable family of Basic Channel. With his own releases (latest album ADSOM, 2006) the artist – as composer, singer, instrumentalist, and producer – proves how profound and relaxed and at the same time vigorous and vibrant electronic roots reggae can sound. Digital and analog instruments, song and track, singing and deejaying, roots and Futurism merge in his productions. There are important binding forces of all the divers activities of Paul St. Hilaire. At first place it is his sublime singing, which always leaves space for the listener’s own associations. And like reggae greats Burning Spear or Horace Andy before him, St. Hilaire always directs a pulse of spiritual light through the unity of his voice and production. Eventually it is this tightrope walk between modernity and tradition, which he masters so organically: From the trenches, St. Hilaire harvests hypermodern reggae from ancient seeds.

Fumiya Tanaka (op.disc, Sundance)

Fumiya Tanaka has been regarded as one of the legendary DJ/artists in Techno over 15 years. He has been doing numerous projects such as his private label “TOREMA RECORDS”, his recent label “op.disc” (co-running with Yoshihiro HANNO aka RADIQ), and his famous party “CHAOS” (in Tokyo and Osaka), and through his long running career, he has been successfully expressing the possibilities of music. His unique style is focused on “minimal” techno, but through his play, he pulls out the beauty, the depth and the thickness of music and turns “minimal” into “maximum”. This is one of the reasons why he is still at the top.

As his recent works, he has been working on his live unit, “DARTRIIX” with Yoshihiro HANNO aka RADIQ and has already released three EPs and a full length album on op.disc.

Now he is planning to start a new label called “Sundance” and it is scheduled to be launched soon.

Mike Shannon

It’s been 10 years since Mike Shannon started making a name for himself on the international techno scene as a DJ, producer and label owner. Now, having relocated to Berlin from Valencia via Montreal in 2007 he’s about to crown his first decade of active service with Memory Tree, his third full length to date, and his debut for another notable Canadian export - Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 Records. Over the years, Mike has well proven that it’s not just his music that makes him such a valuable asset to the techno community, it’s his total dedication to the cause. Whether finding him standing behind a record shop counter or searching out new talent for his labels, it’s always been about bringing people together and investing in the future of the scene.

Mike first got the vinyl bug at the tender age of 12, buying house and techno tunes at Play de Record in Toronto and by 15 his turntable skills were already landing him gigs at local underground parties and clubs. From then on, Mike’s musical world expanded rapidly thanks in no small part to Detroit’s influential WJLB radio station which turned him on to U.R., Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson - influences that still play a big role in his approach to music today. To satisfy his appetite for all things Techno, he was soon managing the orders at Speed Records in his hometown of Kitchener, Ontario where he continued his education; importing cutting edge sounds from across Europe.

Throughout that time, Mike was out DJing and clubbing from Detroit to Toronto, making connections and building up a solid network of producers and artists, which led to the inevitable formation of his own label Cynosure in 1999. A couple of years later, he teamed up with Jeff Milligan on the more experimental Revolver Canada imprint. Both labels have since developed into highly respected and trusted sources, subsequently raising the profile of Canada’s electronic music scene by providing then unknown producers such as Akufen and Deadbeat an international platform to spread their distinctive sound throughout the world. Beyond developing homegrown talent, both imprints continue to invite an inspired selection of international artists including Pier Bucci, Monolake and Brett Johnson to name a few.

For Mike it’s always been a question of choosing uncompromising artists who possess a unique and original voice - an attitude that also defines his own work whether recording as John Shananigans, The Sunaj Assassins or under his own name. There’s a distinctive feel to his music that’s both dark and soulful, that stays true to his roots while embracing the future and never fails to deliver a flurry of kick-ass, funk infected beats easily proven by a volley of timeless singles over the years and his two previous full lengths. Take 2001’s Slight of Hand on Force Inc - an album that cemented his reputation as an up-and-coming Minimal Techno producer and 2005’s Possible Conclusions to Stories That Never End - a collection of chilled-out Electronica inspired by his musical odyssey through out Chile in 2003.

Mike’s recent move to Berlin represents the fulfillment of another chapter in his musical career and with so many influential Canadian producers having taken up residence in the German capital over the last few years, it’s a chance to hook up with old friends again and start collaborating on new plans and ideas, just like the old days. Then of course there’s the new album, the accompanying remix projects and the immediate matter of fatherhood to make 2008 something of a milestone both professionally and personally.

The Mole

Ever heard of Bobby Orr or the Rocket number 9? Neither had The Mole until he moved to Montreal from Canada’s west coast. And now he loves them. Perhaps there is something magical in the humble success of these men that inspires. Who doesn’t love a reluctant hero?

Dance music fans in Victoria and Vancouver in the 90s heard a lot of The Mole in his infancy. His mentors, believing he had a natural talent, pushed him from his DJ beginnings into music production. This natural talent was, in reality, mountains of hard work consummated in secret not unlike the rigorous discipline kung fu students undertake in those wonderful bamboo forests. For The Mole though this retreat took the form of long winters in the French and arguably the cultural capital of Canada, Montreal. Long, cold winters indeed.

It was only natural that the city’s storied disco story would fit him well. Warm people and cold nights warming blood like so much sap in spring. The Mole is often reminded of his voyageur past (as an 18th generation Canadian he is very proud of his French and English roots) when navigating the graveyards of vinyl that abound in his hometown. What could make a black crack addict feel more at home in this cold climate? I tell you what: 7 years of residency at the Laika bar and numerous appearances at the MUTEK Festival.

Enough about why The Mole has chosen to make his burrow in the storied city, let’s talk about the music. Urb magazine named him one of the ‘next 100’ in 2004. His live set at MUTEK 2004 was one of the top ten in the Village Voice Critics’ Poll 2004, followed by 2005’s collaboration with long time friend and band mate Mathew Jonson ‘Dirt Road and a Boat From Soundwave’ on Kompakt’s Speicher was received with critical acclaim. As were his releases that year on Philpot, Musique Risquée and Revolver. 2005 also saw the reunion of the Modern Deep Left Quartet on Wagon Repair, probably the greatest source of pride for the molito to date.

There is also what The Mole refers to as the ‘starchy root machine’. And with a little like that, it should spark some interest! Anyway, it is a performance in which a minimum of 5 turntables are all playing loops that are either manufactured or hand made. With this The Mole then manipulates them, in a traditional DJ sense, with some effects to bump it up (what he confesses is quite a psychedelic experience for him). And although he has, because of other projects had to put this endeavor on the back burner for a little while, he still gets questioned on when he will bring it back. ‘I’ve only ever don it in Montreal because I think the number of tables scares people and it is fairly experimental… though terribly techno as well’.

With his 2006 ‘In my song/Acadian’ being signed to a Sven Vath mix and a part time collaboration with Paddy from Cobblestone Jazz as the ‘Smokin Posties’ releasing their first remix on itiswhatitis, things were heading in the right direction for The Mole. 2007 saw further standout releases on Wagon Repair and late in the year a relocation to Europe, where he’d spent much of the summer months touring. Now 2008 heralds even greater things as The Mole releases his debut album ‘As High As The Sky’ on Wagon Repair and prepares to tour around it across the globe. Plus there’s the release of singles for Prins Thomas Ful Pupp imprint and there’s plans afoot to create a create diggers wet dream of a 7” label with fellow Canadian Koosh, code named Sticky Fingers.

In some ways all this begs the question of ‘why Bobby Orr and Rocked Richard’. In the end The Mole insists that he’s ‘just a hockey player’. Wait that’s not right! He doesn’t even play hockey. In fact, he can barely skate! But he does love music with a humble and honest gratitude that can be heard throughout his work.
