More 龍馬伝: Alt House in Nagasaki
After I finished recording a funny scene at NHK last Thursday, I thought it might be nice to share some more about my character, William Alt, from the Taiga ドラマ: 龍馬伝, as well as a bit about what I’ve gone through so far.

The shot seen above was taken at the shoot down in Nagasaki and likely seen in episode 29, last month. Each scene, we were surrounded by hundreds of visitors who were trying to get a glimpse of the action. My horse kept eating the flowers on the trees close to my mark so it was funny trying to navigate her when I heard “action”! We shot until nearly 3am if I remember correctly that day.

In between our mid-day scene and the one that ended early in the morning, Tim Wellard and I were able to quickly head over to check out the Alt House and the Glover museum. As it was after the regular closing time, we were not been able to go into Alt House but spent an hour or so inside the museum to look around, learn a bit more about Glover and his family, as well as rehearse the lines for our relatively big scene in episode 29. I thought it turned out well in the end though. Would love to hear anyone’s thoughts on it!
Here’s a bit I found about the Alt House, again taken from the Nagasaki Foreign Settlement site:
The former house of William J. Alt and family has been designated an Important Cultural Asset by the Japanese government and is preserved today on its original site (now part of the Glover Garden complex). Built from stone (the pillars were imported from Italy), the house was used for only five years by the Alt family and saw a colorful variety of uses over the following years. In 1903 it became the property of the Ringer family, who resided here up to the outbreak of World War II. Damaged by the atomic bomb, the building served for many years as a tenement house before being purchased by Nagasaki City in 1970, refurbished, and opened to the public as part of Glover Garden.
