JMEC (Japan Market Expansion Competition) is a business training program designed to strengthen the skills of young business executives while fostering the development of foreign businesses in Japan.
The JMEC program is centered on a competition to write the best business plan for client companies. Sponsored by eleven foreign Chambers of Commerce in Japan along with the European Business Council in Japan, the program matches the desire of young executives to learn about doing business in Japan with the needs of foreign companies to prepare detailed business plans for their products and services in the Japanese market.
I participated in last year’s version of the program and felt that it really changed my outlook on what I want to do with my life in Japan and in the future. I know there are a lot of people out there in Japan right now wondering what their next moves will be. It’s to those people that I write this note. Take a chance. It just might be what you need to get your career off and running (or if you’re like me, to get your own business off and running!). If you’re working for a company, there’s a very good chance that they’ll even sponsor you into it as it’s meant to help you become an employee that adds value to the enterprise. So is there any good reason not to give it a try?
JMEC 14 will begin in November of 2007 and will finish in June of 2008. Check here for more information about the program schedule and important dates. The deadline is today, Oct 26th but if you contact the people below within the next 7 days, you might be lucky enough to be accepted into the program like I was last year with my late registration!

I’ve just been sitting here and thinking about all the things that have gone on since the last time I wrote.. I’m exhausted by it all! I guess I should have updated this a little sooner. Let’s see, where to begin..
Puma French 77. I helped organize all of the models for a Puma event highlighting their new collection of gear with a theme from 1977 in France. It was a blend of nice style fitted into sports fashion which was right up my alley. I got to model their signature outfit that you can see in their new commercials for that particular event. Very cool pink shirt and funky hoody style jacket. I even had this fella from Iceland try to barter it off me while I was still working! All in all, lot of smiles and a pretty fun event, if you ask me.
Fujiwara Norika and Jinnai wedding reception. Dressed in a tuxedo, I acted as one of the doormen with another local foreign talent, Johan Kristensson, at this nationally televised event on Nihon Terebi (NTV). The event was in Kobe at the New Otani Hotel. Such a nice view from that hotel out across the bay in Kobe. I found out later that this show was watched by around 25% of the country!! Did anyone out there even notice me? Probably not since Norika was so beautiful that day. My highlight for the event was meeting the Japanese comedian Hard Gay. He didn’t even have to say anything and I laughed. Love those kind of people.
“300” movie premiere. Last week on the 6th, I acted as a Spartan soldier for the premiere of the film “300″ at the Shotoku Kinen Kaigakan near Shinanomachi in the middle of Tokyo. I got to speak briefly with Gerry Butler and was right next to Frank Miller. Pretty intense job though as we were covered in brown makeup and had to hold shields up for over an hour! Fun times..
JMEC 13. The program had its awards / graduation ceremony two Fridays past and I’m happy to say that I graduated! After 8 long months of hard work, determination and discipline - I really feel that I have learned a great deal and can now get back to focusing on developing my own business. For any of you English speakers out there living in Tokyo that want a major challenge to bring them new insights into the business world that is Japan, join this program for its 14th edition from next November. It will give you the spark that you need going forward in your careers. Some of the local chambers of commerce involved with the event even sponsor people from their own countries - such as the ANZCCJ.
NHL playoffs. Another chance for Canada to win the Stanley Cup has just gone down the drain when the Senators from Ottawa lost the Ducks from Anaheim just over a week ago. Ah well, at least we keep winning world championships!
Ma Chambre. Last Friday night, my girlfriend and I attended the opening event for a new restaurant / lounge called Ma Chambre at the Izumi garden complex in the Roppongi area. Ma Chambre means “my room” in English and the layout certainly had that sort of feel. The food was great and there was no end to the Veuve Clicquot flowing into everyones’ eager glasses. I met several interesting Japanese people there and had a great night out for sure.
I’m now preparing for a couple of events that I’m helping promote in the next couple of weeks:
Crossroads on June 23rd. The Crossroads events combine a fusion of ideas with performance, art installations, animation, alternative lifestyles, and club culture to bring people together in an open and evolving environment, breaking open the doors to connectivity, coexistence and peace.
Real Grooves on June 30th is a CD Release party for the event mixed by the headlining DJ, Mike Shannon. Real Grooves is a regular event and mainstay at Space Lab Yellow in Nishi Azabu, Tokyo (about an 8 minute walk from Roppongi station). The mantra: Good music makes a difference. Our mission is to provide an atmosphere with top quality music that will stay with you and touch the soul. We are dedicated to bringing the best of the best, music that you can really feel and connect with.
Look forward to seeing you at the events!
Our 48 hour film project has teamed up with 24eiga.com so we’ve changed our festival date. Since that film festival is in September, we’ve decided to hold ours in the 2nd or 3rd week of October so that we can allow the winner from it to participate in ours. I hope you’re all as excited as I am for this! Tell all of your friends and come together to make a film this fall..
One last thing - for those of you out there curious to learn a little bit about philosophy without having to take a 6 month course, I suggest reading Sophie’s World. The author Jostein Gaarder brings together 3000 years of thought into just over 400 pages. A thought provoking book to say the least.
Til next time,
