It’s not everyday I read a story on an online magazine targeting woman readers but I noticed in my Google inbox recently an ad from Glamour magazine about cancer fighting foods that I’ve been following this summer. I’ll attach it below for those health conscious souls out there!
A healthy, balanced diet is key, experts say, but these foods may have an extra punch.
Leafy greens: Deep green leafy vegetables are packed with lutein, vitamin A and folate, nutrients that may help prevent colon and ovarian cancer.
* Spinach
* Kale
* Collard greens
* Arugula
* Dandelion greens
Curry: Yellow curry contains cur-cumin, a pungent spice that may help prevent melanoma and other types of cancer cells from proliferating.
Cruciferous veggies: These contain phytochemicals that may cut the risk of stomach, breast and skin cancers.
* Broccoli
* Broccoli sprouts
* Cabbage
* Bok choy
* Cauliflower
* Watercress
* Swiss chard
Berries: These fruits contain antioxidants such as polyphenols, which counteract and repair cell damage.
* Blueberries
* Blackberries
* Raspberries
* Strawberries
* Cranberries
* Red grapes
Tomatoes: Studies suggest that having a tomato-rich diet may help lower the risk of developing both lung and stomach cancer.

May 20, 2008 at 1:58 am · Filed under Acai Berry, Ashtanga Yoga, Healthy Eating, Monavie, My Daily Insights, Recipes, William James
I woke up today and felt compelled to change my routine. So for the first time since August, I proceeded to practice the “quick and easy” ashtanga yoga (for beginners) routine my fiancee had taught me prior to then over a span of about 6 months. Ha! Whoever named it quick and easy was obviously someone who could do it in their sleep / an expert at yoga. After I’d stretched myself out, I made a Monavie mixed smoothie (check out my recipe below) to get the energy I needed for the day and shortly thereafter, started to work on my marketing projects.
Although I felt I was not particularly in need of any inspiration precisely at that moment, upon opening up my email account I noticed, sitting at the top of my inbox, a message from My Daily Insights. The title of my blog there inscribed; a quote from William James. I wasn’t even sure who that was. Not that I’ve ever let not knowing something bother me. After all Socrates always said, “..wisest is she who knows she does not know.” I couldn’t agree more. Besides, I’m sure at that point, I felt more or less that it’d be more important to dwell on his words before searching for more information about the man himself (I later came to find out that he was the godson of Ralph Waldo Emerson and that he, himself, was an influential psychologist & philosopher around 1900).
So here I am after doing a wee bit o’ dwelling ’bout those few words I’d alloted in my title… At this stage of my life, the one where I’m preparing for the triple whammy of becoming a husband, a father and a business owner over the next 6 months, I’ve noticed that my responsibilities in life are changing much more quickly that at any other point up until now. After reading that, I’m sure most of you who’ve gone through a similar stage can appreciate the lessons you learned from it. I certainly understand the need to be “awakened” now, in 2007, more than ever before. Luckily, my thirst for knowledge of late has never been greater either. I’ve been reading books, participating in engaging courses, discovering mentors (who’ve always been in my midst) and adjusting thus, my worldview especially, little by little every day since the end of October, two years past. What I’ve more or less learned - it won’t be a question of when will I be prepared for all of these things but rather simply starting, trying and learning as I go. Without the support of those around me, I’m not sure I ever would have been any more awake. It is my hope that I can share what I learn with others to help them lead easier lives. At the end of the day, if you don’t share what you know with others then it doesn’t really matter at all what you know, does it?
So everyone please, stop being afraid to share your story. By opening up the eyes of those around you with your words, we’ll all begin to understand each other that much more easily.

Jeffrey’s Monavie Mixed Smoothie Recipe
Mix in a blender:
1 Banana
15-20 frozen Blueberries
4-5 frozen Strawberries
~200 mL Monavie Juice (18 types of fruit including the Acai berry from Brazil)
a Tbsp of Flax seed
a Tbsp of Psyllium Husks (milled)
a Tbsp of Honey
either a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream or plain yoghurt
Honti ni oishii dayo ne!
A little info about the acai:
The acai berry, pronounced a-sigh-ee, is a rather small, round, and dark purple berry. It resembles a grape or a blueberry, but is slightly smaller and darker. It has a large seed and a small amount of pulp. The berries have been used for many generations by the natives of Brazil. They boast 10 times the antioxidant benefits of grapes and twice that of blueberries. The acai berry is now broadly used in energy juices, ice cream, and certain energy bars with granola.
A list of health benefits that the acai berry is well known for:
* Increases energy
* Improves digestion
* Improves concentration
* Promotes restful sleep
* Provides almost all the required daily vitamins a person needs
* Contains a variety of vital minerals
* Is a very powerful free radical killer
* Contains a high level of fiber
* Helps to both cleanse and detoxify your body
* Strengthens the immune system
* Improves sexual drive and function
* Combats cancer cells
* Fights premature aging
* Helps promote healthy and beautiful-looking skin
(Not a bad combination of things if you ask me!)
