20 cancer-fighting foods to eat all summer

It’s not everyday I read a story on an online magazine targeting woman readers but I noticed in my Google inbox recently an ad from Glamour magazine about cancer fighting foods that I’ve been following this summer. I’ll attach it below for those health conscious souls out there!

A healthy, balanced diet is key, experts say, but these foods may have an extra punch.

Leafy greens: Deep green leafy vegetables are packed with lutein, vitamin A and folate, nutrients that may help prevent colon and ovarian cancer.

* Spinach
* Kale
* Collard greens
* Arugula
* Dandelion greens

Curry: Yellow curry contains cur-cumin, a pungent spice that may help prevent melanoma and other types of cancer cells from proliferating.

Cruciferous veggies: These contain phytochemicals that may cut the risk of stomach, breast and skin cancers.

* Broccoli
* Broccoli sprouts
* Cabbage
* Bok choy
* Cauliflower
* Watercress
* Swiss chard

Berries: These fruits contain antioxidants such as polyphenols, which counteract and repair cell damage.

* Blueberries
* Blackberries
* Raspberries
* Strawberries
* Cranberries
* Red grapes

Tomatoes: Studies suggest that having a tomato-rich diet may help lower the risk of developing both lung and stomach cancer.

For more important anticancer tips, head over to Glamour for their expert advice.

Zino magazine and the great pita debacle メンズ雑誌Zinoと気まぐれなおいしいピタ屋さnn

Hey there. I just wanted to share a story with you all about something that happened to me last week. I arrived in Tameike-Sanno a little early for a shoot for Zino magazine and found myself a bit hungry. As I was walking up the station’s exit stairs, I noticed a sign for a pita shop, “Pita the Great“, with somewhat confusing directions on how to get there. As I was trying to figure it out, my manager was coming up the stairs. I pointed out the shop sign and mentioned I’d like to grab a quick bite to eat before getting to the studio. We had a quick look for it but I had to settle for a hot tuna melt sandwich from a nearby Starbucks. Oddly enough, the staff recognized me from my NHK show and had a big smile on her face when I ordered. Thanks for making me smile, Chihiro san! Ok, so no pita for me but at least I’m not famished heading into the shoot.

The magazine is an editorial fashion type similar to Leon or Oceans I suppose. I shot about 5 cuts for them that day and as I was finishing, I received a message from my manager with a picture of a pita in it from the hard-to-find aforementioned shop. He’d stopped by there for lunch after he left the studio. He explained as best he could where it was and by the time I found it, I was craving a pita big time! As I walked in to the small restaurant with my big smile of anticipation, the manager smiled back and then said very welcomingly, …. “We’re closed.” He was still smiling from ear to ear as I left. Aaaargh!! Denied my craving. Never a good feeling. I knew it didn’t matter whatever I ate the rest of the day, it just simply wasn’t going to taste good. (I was right. Shortly thereafter settling for a salad at Roppongi Hills just didn’t fill me up. I guess I couldn’t get the pita out of my head!)

Well, the story doesn’t end here, I’ll tell you that. The following day, I got another call from my agency to shoot with Zino again and… it was at the same studio! :) I planned to arrive early in the area and did just that. I was unfortunately at the end of a little pita line up but I finally got my Big Pita right before I had to be at the studio. Before leaving, I asked the man when he was open until and he kind of indicated “when he was ready to close”. A bit odd I thought but to each his own I guess. I then ran out the door, pita in hand, towards the studio!

When I arrived, I sat down and had a few minutes to eat while things were being prepared. Oh, how joyful it was. Perhaps I hadn’t eaten anything like it for months, if not years. I told everyone there about it as they were curious about the strange thing I was holding in my hand and scarfing down. I’m not sure if they completely understood but I’m sure they could catch “Pita the Great - just down the street”. I actually went back after the shoot again to try to get some to bring home but surprise, surprise… closed again!

What an interesting way of running a business, eh?

Well, so there we have it - another story and a new craving - falafel pitas. I’ll try to keep you all up-to-date on my Tokyo cravings as much as I can but here’s where I’d like to ask you all for some help. If you know of any other restaurants in Tokyo that serve nice pitas - I want to know as do the rest of us out there craving a good pita in this bit town. I can never seem to find the right information out there when I wish I had it and I know that I’m not alone. Let me know your favourites!

Oh and if you care to, check me out in the January issue of Zino magazine…
